I use Claude when refactoring a legacy .Net project. It’s fairly good at refactoring small functions but the size of files exceeds the context window, etc, etc.

I’m writing my own side project. It uses Rust vs JavaScript on the legacy project. As a rule, I’ve noticed that JavaScript and Python are proportionally better when written by LLMs, while the more closed source or obscure the language (Ada, for instance) is more likely to hallucinate.

However, I’ve noticed the refactoring for the Rust project is far easier than the JavaScript, despite the file sizes being similar (about 1000 lines of code) and the same number of files needing to be juggled. Claude is able to refactor without losing functionality (unlike o1-preview) and I don’t spend twice as long fixing subtle bugs like I do on the legacy project.

My theory is that I’m writing better use cases and specifications for the Rust project than for a legacy product whose original developers left sparse or deprecated specifications. Does anyone else notice the same effect or is it something more personal to now I’m prompting?
